Weaving through the coral at Adaaran Club Rannalhi, the hawksbill turtle is easy to spot with its sharp, bird-like beak and shell of overlapping amber-and-brown scutes, each one catching the light like tortoiseshell inlay. Native to these Indo-Pacific reefs, it moves with a quiet purpose, tucking into crevices and coral heads in search of sponges, its preferred meal.
That striking shell tells a deeper story. Hawksbills are critically endangered, their populations pushed to the brink by decades of harvesting for their beautiful scutes, making every sighting on the Rannalhi house reef a genuinely rare privilege rather than a guarantee. Slow to mature and slower still to recover as a species, they depend entirely on reefs like this one staying healthy and undisturbed.
Its presence here is a quiet marker of a reef doing well, a signal that the coral, the sponges and the wider ecosystem are intact enough to support one of the ocean`s most vulnerable travellers.
