More than just a tropical getaway, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu is a living gateway into one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on earth. With 36 distinct dive sites surrounding the island, guests encounter a kaleidoscope of coral reefs teeming with life — from manta rays and reef sharks to schools of technicolour fish gliding through crystal-clear waters. A World Beneath: Discover the Raa Atoll
The Raa Atoll offers a balance of drift dives, thilas (underwater pinnacles), and shallower coral gardens ideal for both beginners and experts. With warm sea temperatures that rarely dip below 28°C, visibility frequently exceeding 25 metres, and gentle to moderate currents, the conditions are almost tailor-made for underwater exploration. The resort’s multilingual team of certified instructors, fluent in English, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Czech, and Dhivehi, ensures a seamless and personalised experience, whether guests are embarking on a first-time discovery dive or advanced underwater scooter explorations
An Underwater Calendar: Seasonal Marine Encounters
One of Meedhupparu’s most extraordinary qualities lies in its year-round diving calendar. Thanks to its exceptional location, the resort offers manta ray encounters year-round, with dive sites on both the eastern and western sides perfectly aligned with the seasonal monsoons.
January to April:
This period brings Meedhupparu’s finest diving conditions, with calm seas, balanced currents, and impressive visibility. Clarity and underwater light are often exceptional, creating perfect conditions for photographers. Encounters with grey reef sharks, manta rays, schooling fusiliers, and Napoleon wrasses are frequent.
March to May:
This is the prime time for larger pelagic species. Divers may spot silver tip and lemon sharks cruising the outer reef slopes, their rarely seen silhouettes gliding effortlessly in the blue. Eagle rays soar near the coral drop-offs, while turtles and groupers find refuge in coral overhangs.
May to June & November to December (Monsoon Transition Period):
These months bring subtle changes in sea currents and weather patterns. Nurse sharks can be seen resting in the sandy shallows and stingrays sweeping across the seabed. Mobula rays make their presence known more frequently during November and December.
September to October:
Rich plankton blooms attract large congregations of mantas that spiral above cleaning stations in a mesmerising dance. Shark encounters become more frequent, with black tip, white tip, and grey reef sharks patrolling reef edges in dynamic schools. Underwater visibility remains superb.
The Thrill of Variety: 36 Dive Sites to Explore
Adaaran Select Meedhupparu enjoys an extensive and diverse range of 36 dive sites close to shore, each with their own personality and rhythm:
- The Shark Thilas – These thrilling sites offer encounters with grey reef and black tip reef sharks cruising the plateaus, accompanied by tunas, jacks, and snappers.
- Kottefaru Bodu Thila – A gentle slope leading to a cleaning station frequented by manta rays during high tide, especially abundant from September to October.
- Beriyan Bodu Thila – A dazzling tableau of hard and soft corals home to anemonefish, parrotfish, and moray eels, perfect for relaxed exploration and macro photography.
- Digufaru Thila – Known for its eagle rays, grey reef sharks and occasional nurse sharks resting on the seabed.
